The 5th and final stage was 155km between Neuf-Brisac › Dannemari and would be sure to be a tough day to round out 5 days of racing.
Bas Tietema was again representing us as after 6km a breakaway of 5 riders attacked and gained an advantage of four minutes. Bas once again was able to extend his lead in the various jerseys and turn his thoughts towards the stage win.
Despite the wind being a continual challenge throughout the day, the breakaway worked well together and their gap stabilised as a result. With just 20 kilometres to go the group still had a two and a half minute lead and it looked their move may prove to be successful.
Continuing in their charge to the line the breakaway gave a strong chase to keep the peloton within reaching distance. As the breakaway went under the flamme rouge it was to be the end of their day up the road, as the peloton swept them up and went on to contest the victory.
Bas Tietema managed to keep his lead in the KM70, Combativity and Points jerseys and come so close to a victory proving the fantastic form he has built with the help of Cenit at the Altitude camp.
Bas reports after another tough day out:
"We worked really well together inside the breakaway. Inside the final we started to attack each other but nobody could get away. We never gave up right until the end but with 800 metres to go the peloton caught us. I am happy with my performance here in France and I hope to build on the form I have shown here."
